Plugin Review: Video SEO for WordPress SEO

There seems to be a lot of interest lately in rich media snippets, otherwise known as microdata or microformats.

The plugin under review today makes use of this type of data to give us better results in our SEO marketing efforts.

You have probably already heard about WordPress SEO, and hopefully you are using it too. Why? It’s pretty much the leading SEO plugin for WordPress, one of those plugins you just have to install on every WordPress site you create.

But today we’re here to talk about an add-on plugin to WordPress SEO, called Video SEO.

This is the first premium plugin add-on that Joost de Valk (Yoast) has created, and is available from his website at $89.

The core idea of the Video SEO plugin is to improve your results in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). Many people spend so much time and money on improving their site’s SEO, but then forget that it’s also about attracting the human eye in search engine results.

Consider the following screenshot of a search in Google:

Normal search listing

And then another one where we have a site (WP Mayor) which has Video SEO installed:

Video SEO in action

What can we tell when looking at the two?

I think you will agree with me that the listing having a video included in it is the one that attracts the most attention.

Incidentally, the other listings which attract attention are those which have the author displayed, and this is also due to them included microformats. The listing from the WordPress.org plugin repository, which has star ratings, is also a winner, and again it is enhanced with the use of rich snippets.

So we’re seeing a trend here, with more and more people turning to microformats to better describe their posts and gain some advantage in the SERPs.

The nice thing is that you don’t have to create the videos yourself. In the post highlighted above, I just inserted a video from YouTube and it showed up in the SERPs next to my post title and description. Very easy and no effort needed from my end.

The Video SEO plugin supports:

  • Automatic XML Video Sitemap generation (adding on to the WordPress SEO XML Sitemaps)
  • MediaRSS enhancements to your RSS feed
  • Full support for schema.org videoObject markup
  • Snippet previews with the actual video still in them
  • Facebook OpenGraph tags on your video pages
  • Support for many major video platforms, including Youtube, Vimeo, Blip, DailyMotion and others

Here’s a video overview of the Video SEO plugin:

I’m already using it on most of my blogs, and I’ve got to say that I really love this plugin and now consider it as one of my essential plugins. It’s so easy to set up and get it going, and the results are great as my pages are now more attractive in the search engine results pages.

Considering that this plugin can be used on as many sites as you wish, it’s a very good deal and one that will instantly improve your SEO efforts. There aren’t many plugins that can make that claim and really deliver, so I’m giving this plugin a full thumbs up from my end.

How to Move/Migrate from All in One SEO to WordPress SEO by Yoast Plugin

WordPress community is ever growing and developers always strive to come out with a better solution. When it comes to SEO, two plugins that come my mind are: All In One SEO Pack and WordPress SEO by Yoast. Of course you’ll need only one from these two plugins for your WordPress based site.

I would always choose the WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin because of the features that it comes packed with. Some of the options that really stand out of this plugin are:

  • Import settings from WooThemes SEO framework, All-in-One SEO and Headspace2.
  • Edit .htaccess, .robots.txt files directly.
  • In-built Breadcrumbs support.
  • Automatic snippet generation to see how your webpage could appear in search results.
  • Easily add text and link to the footer or header of your RSS Feeds to prevent RSS scrapers.
  • Social Integration.
  • Clean up head section.
  • XML Sitemap generation, no other plugin needed.

Because of all these features, this plugin is surely a powerhouse. So if you’ve made the decision to move away from All In One SEO Pack to WordPress SEO plugin, then you’ve come to the right place. It might seem to you that this process would require much time, but in reality, migrating is a piece of cake. You can import all of the settings from All In One SEO Pack to WordPress SEO plugin. Let’s take a look at how this can be done.

Importing from All In One SEO Pack

Simply follow the below steps carefully.

    1. Install WordPress SEO plugin. Go to your WordPress Admin > Plugins > Add New and search for “WordPress SEO”. Click on Install and then Activate the plugin.
    2. Now it’s time to ‘Disable’ All in One SEO pack. Go to Plugins and Deactivate this plugin.
    3. After installing the WordPress SEO plugin, you will get a new menu in your Admin area named as “SEO”. Go to SEO -> Import.

  1. From here, checkmark “Import from All-in-One-SEO” and then click on “Import” button.
  2. Wait for some time and you are done with the importing part.

The above procedure should import all the meta descriptions, meta keywords and titles that you entered into All In One SEO Pack. Do check out some of your posts and pages to confirm if everything is imported properly. If for some reason this process doesn’t work, then you can try out SEO Data Transporter plugin, which is also recommended by Joost de Valk, the developer of WordPress SEO plugin. This plugin allows you to transfer your SEO data from one theme/plugin to another.

Configuring the WordPress SEO Plugin

You need to take some more steps to properly configure the newly installed plugin.

  • Verification: Go to SEO > Dashboard and enter the verification code from Google Webmaster tools, Bing and Alexa. You would also like to click on the “Start Tour” button to quickly learn about the use of this plugin.
  • Titles & Metas: Set-up templates for titles and meta descriptions for homepage, posts, pages, taxonomies and other pages.
  • Social: Configure Facebook OpenGraph and Twitter card from here.
  • XML Sitemaps: Generate XML Sitemap from here. If you are using Google XML Sitemaps, then you can disable that plugin and start using this functionality instead.
  • Internal Links: Enable Breadcrumbs from here.
  • RSS: Add content to put before or after each post in the feed. This content will be displayed in the RSS Feeds and helps prevent RSS scrapers.

So that’s all you need to get started. Take a closer look at all of these options and spend some time to configure the WordPress SEO plugin. Happy migrating!
